Rio Grande Streamline Engine

$19.99

Built in 1955, Denver and Rio Grande Western 5771 spent most of its time pulling passenger trains along the D&RGW’s Moffat Tunnel route between Denver and Salt Lake City.

During the first part of its life, 5771 led the D&RGW’s portion of the famed California Zephyr passenger train through the Rocky Mountains, linking up with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in Denver and Western Pacific Railroad (and later Southern Pacific Railroad) in Salt Lake City.

When Amtrak was formed in 1971 to take over passenger rail duties from the railroads, the D&RGW was one of several railroads to hold out. 5771 then pulled the Rio Grande Zephyr along the same route until it was discontinued and the railroad allowed Amtrak to use the original route of the California Zephyr on its tracks in 1983.

The engine then proceeded to pull the railroad’s traditional ski trains and other smaller freight trains. In 1996, 5771 was transferred to the Colorado Railroad Museum along with 5762 and restored to its original Aspen gold and silver livery which it dons today.
