Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose

Faced with the prospect of dwindling customers and revenue due to the Great Depression, the Rio Grande Southern needed a cheaper way to move passengers, freight and, more importantly, mail along its line between Durango and Ridgeway, Colorado.
Enter the Galloping Goose.
These were seven motor railcars that were derived from full size automobile cars. The result was a fleet of rail vehicles that could be operated by one person and needing less service than steam engines, reducing the RGS’s costs of running the railroad.
While it’s unclear where the name Galloping Goose came from, though two theories are because of the way the cars rocked back and forth and because of the air horn used instead of a traditional steam whistle.
The geese operated on the line until the Rio Grande Southern ceased operations in 1952.
This is Galloping Goose No. 7, the last of them to be built, at it’s present-day home at the Colorado Railroad Museum.
